3-Tier Teapot Birthday Cake
I was so excited to try making a teapot for this order. As we all know, I don't use fondant in my creations. so I needed to figure out what I would do for the spout and handle. In the end I decided to just use cardstock to create those parts of the teapot. I think it turned out very cute. The bottom tier and top tier of this cake were pink lemonade with vanilla cream filling, the middle tier was raspberry-kissed chocolate cake with chocolate cream filling. I also made the birthday banner pictured. This order was made to match the party supplies pictured below. Thanks for another great request, Anne! And Happy 4th Birthday, Saffron!

Bumble Bee Cake with Pink Hearts
I had another request for a bumble bee cake. A few changes from the others... This one is frosted white instead of yellow, and also has little pink hearts on each bee to add a little bit of a girly touch. This is a dark chocolate cake with raspberry filling - all frosted with buttercream. The mini-cupcakes that make up the flower are vanilla cake, and I also made the custom topper.

Valentine's Cakes
Yum - Red Velvet cake with cream cheese frosting. A cute little cake for a mommy to give her little boy on Valentine's Day. Happy Valentine's Day to all!
The next three little cakes were for my Valentine's here at home. They were also red velvet. The one frosted white was with vanilla-almond buttercream. The two for my kiddos were decorated with buttercream. I figured they could do without a full frosting job, they had plenty of sugar from other treats all day. :o)

Ivory Snowflake Wedding Cake
This 4-tier wedding cake was for my cousin's wedding this week. She requested an ivory cake with the hearts, snow, and snowflakes incorporated. The top tier is a very small 4-inch round cake for the couple to save for their first anniversary. The tier below that is my first attempt at an eggless cake, as one of my cousins has an allergy to eggs (as well as almonds - so no almond extract in the frosting either). It is a vanilla cake filled with vanilla buttercream. Below that tier is a chocolate cake tier with chocolate cream filling, then the bottom tier is a vanilla cake with vanilla cream filling. The whole cake is frosted and decorated with vanilla buttercream. The red hearts are made from Wilton Candy Melts. The wedding was so lovely and it is always great to see family. Congratulations to my cousin Layna and her new husband, Jeff!!!

White on White Wedding Cake
This cake is the biggest I've done yet! Not necessarily because of the height, but the actual amount of cake. The mother-of-the-bride chose this design for her daughter's wedding cake. She wanted to have two sets of tiers, with one containing the little bride and groom in the car topper. Because of the topper I had to use taller than usual columns. She requested a simple white on white cake and decided on fresh flowers to adorn the tiers. I incorporated the scrolly hearts into the design because I knew hearts were a theme for the wedding. I also arranged the flowers once I set the cake up on site. The bottom tier is dark chocolate cake with chocolate cream filling, the middle two tiers are yellow cake with raspberry filling, and the small top tier is dark chocolate cake. All is frosted with vanilla buttercream.Friday, August 12, 2011

Kindergarten Graduation Cupcakes
One of the local schools celebrated the kindergartners' first year with what they call a Q-U wedding ceremony. I guess they have the boys act as one letter and the girls as the other and they walk down an aisle and everything. A friend asked if I would make some cupcakes for the event. The colors were Quince (peach) and Aqua. The point being so the kindergartners always remember to put 'u' after 'q' and a fun way to end the year. I did 4 dozen cupcakes, some vanilla and some chocolate. I also made the little toppers.

Alice in Wonderland Cake for Piper
The cake platform is decorated with paper cutouts from my Cricut machine, the bottom tier of the cake (the Cheshire Cat) is chocolate filled with vanilla mousse, and the top tier (Mad Hatter's Hat) is rainbow chip filled with vanilla mousse. The teacup is plastic, but is stuffed with cake and frosted, topped with two marshmallow slices for the White Rabbit's ears. The whole cake is frosted with vanilla buttercream. The white details were cut from an edible Wilton Sugar Sheet (teeth, tag in hat, clock face, and doily on top).

Sweetheart Cake
My little lady turned 5 this weekend. She's such a little sweetheart, so that was our theme - hearts. She wanted a strawberry cake, which I filled with chocolate mousse and frosted with vanilla buttercream. Pretty good! The top tier was heart shaped.
I tried a new product on this cake. The hearts are all cutouts from edible paper from Wilton, called Sugar Sheets. The taste was okay, the texture was a little weird... kind of like paper that melts in your mouth after the first couple chews. I cut all the hearts on the Sugar Sheets using my Cricut. It worked awesome!
I also made the topper, matching banner, and dangling hearts. Sophia reminded me that we should cut some of the bleeding hearts from the yard and put them inside for decorations. So we did that, of course. It was a fun day for our little Sweetheart.

Sophia's 1st Birthday Cake
A little history - I took a cake decorating class in 7th grade as a hobby. At the time my mother and I practiced making quite a few cakes, but then after a while not so many at all. I hadn't made a cake using a piping bag or tips for a number of years until Kyle and I were married. Then I think I made him a birthday cake or two, but really wanted to get back into it after our daughter was born. This was her first birthday cake in May of 2007. If I had to do this cake again I would use the next size down heart pan that I have for the top and make it a thicker layer. But it was fun to have a cake to go with our pink and brown polk-a-dot theme.
